7th and 8th Grade Homework Due August 22 2012

7th Grade:  The 7th grade students need to explain their understanding of, "Popular Sovereignty."

Hint:  During the 1850's new states were requesting to enter the Union as either free states or slave states.  This decision often came from the government.  However, in 1854 with the passing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the idea of allowing the people, of each new territory, to vote on whether they wanted to live in free or slave state was the new approach to this difficult issue.

8th Grade: The 8th grade students need to answer the following questions:

  1. Explain why the Committee of Correspondence was important in the unification of the American Colonists.
  2. How did the Committee of Correspondence work to get information to all the American Colonists?
  3. What is the Committee of Correspondence?
  4. Who created the Committee of Correspondence?
