This was followed by two days completing the standards for the 1866 -1877 time period. Currently, the classes are in the midst of the Industrial Revolution. In this Unit students will focus on the rapid change from agriculture to industry and how this impacted the United States both at home and abroad. More specifically, students will gain an understanding of how industrialization impacted the growth of cities, immigration, political policies, and people such as John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie who led the Industrial movement in the United States. In addition, students will gain knowledge on the concept of monopolies and why they are illegal in this country. Industrialization will lead to the next Unit on Imperialism. As a class we will study the race of first world countries to gain territories around the to aid in the progress of these nations. With new territories comes increased power, access to resources, and the many other things we will study. I am excited for this quarter and look forward to what the students bring to the classroom both in discussion and material.

8th Grade: The students are continuing the Unit on Government. We started the quarter with a review of the material covered before break and quickly moved to the new material needed to be covered. One recent class activity required students to work in groups with each group responsible for one core principle that is the foundation of the United States Constitution. The groups consisted of Limited Government, Separation of Powers, Popular Sovereignty, Checks and Balances, and Federalism. Each group had to demonstrate mastery of their principle by teaching to the class what the principle means and how it functions in the United States Government. Currently, the students are focusing on an in depth study of the Executive Branch. This includes everything from the duties of the President to the function of the Electoral College. As a class we still have a some topics to cover in government before we move to our next Unit. Great start to the 3rd Quarter!

7th and 8th Grade Update!

7th Grade: The 7th grade students successfully completed the Civil War Unit. Currently we are exploring the twelve year period following the Civil War, Reconstruction (1865 - 1877). This Unit will include an in depth study of the social, economic, and political impact Reconstruction had on United States citizens and on the country as a whole. In addition, the students will incorporate the study of geography as they prepare to take both a United States and Europe map test. Once we return from fall break 3rd quarter will begin by taking a Bench Mark History test. This will allow the students to demonstrate their comprehension of material covered thus far, and provide important data for the direction of future instruction. Following the completion of Reconstruction, the students will move on to a study of the Industrial Revolution and Imperialism.

8th Grade: The 8th grade students have started their Government Unit. This unit follows their completion of the American Revolution. As a class we are reviewing the documents, people, and theories that influenced our founding fathers in their creation of the United States Constitution. Some such influences are found in The Magna Carta, The English Bill of Rights, John Locke, and Montesquieu. Furthermore, the students will develop an understanding of how Federalism works and what the difference is between a Unitary, Confederate, and Federal Government. This Unit will enlighten students on the importance of Democracy and connect their previous studies of the American Revolution to Current world events, such as the Rebellions in the Middle East. Once we return from fall break the students will take a Bench Mark Test to demonstrate their comprehension of material up to this point and guide the course of instruction as we begin the second semester.

Enjoy your Holiday and I will see you in 2012!

Best wishes and Happy New Year,

Ms. Van

7th and 8th Grade Update!

7th Grade: The 7th Grade students are near the finish line of the Civil War Unit. As a class we have just finished the concept of sectionalism and the role sectionalism played in the Civil War. The next concept is technology which the students will study through a combination of group work, text book reading, and actual footage of the Civil War. Once the class finishes the study of one concept, each student will be able to answer the question attached to that concept from the graphic organizer. As a class we will discuss the answers students have reached based on our classroom activities. There will be quizzes given throughout this unit to check for student understanding.

8th Grade: Declaration of Independence & American Revolution! Currently the students are working on a group project. The second quarter begins with each group presenting their finished project to the class. The group project is focused on an in depth study of The Declaration of Independence. As a class, we studied the four main sections of The Declaration of Independence; The Preamble, Natural Rights, List of Grievances, and Dissolving of Bonds. Each Group is responsible for creating a current version of The Declaration of Independence. The goal is for the students to demonstrate their understanding of the significance of this document and the impact it has had world wide. Their finished projects should be creative, and use words that impact the reader the way Thomas Jefferson influenced his readers. Once we finish our study of The Declaration of Independence, the students will begin to unravel the Revolutionary War and the fight that ended with the creation of The United States of America.

7th and 8th Grade Update!

7th Grade: 7th Grade students are still hard at work on their Civil War Unit. Currently, we are finishing the issues that led to the separation of the country into the Union and the Confederacy. The students now will embark on the course of events which took place from 1861 - 1865. I know there have been some challenges along the way which have set us back. So the Test has been postponed until next week. I will update later with a more specific date. Also, parents, progress reports were sent home. If there are any questions please feel free to contact Ms. Van Borkulo and we can address your concerns.

8th Grade: 8th grade students are now at the start of the American Revolution. We have finished all the events leading up to the War, and now the fun begins. This Unit is filled with so much history about how our country was formed and the men responsible for the outcome. The homework assignments will increase as we move through this Unit. However, I have complete confidence in the eighth graders. Additionally, there is a Test on Chapter 5 this Thursday September 22, 2011. I will post study questions Wednesday. I apologize about the delay in getting my welcome letter to you all, however, I was experiencing some technical difficulties which are now all better.

As expected the school year has started and we are going full speed ahead. First I would like to mention how excited I am about our middle school students and staff. From teachers to students, all seem energized and open to all this year has to offer.

7th Grade: 7th grade students are in the midst of uncovering the events which led to the countries divide in the mid 1800's and eventually to the Civil War. We are currently studying events and issues which caused the country to split. The topics include Slavery, States Rights, and all the problems that arose because of these two very important issues.

8th Grade: 8th grade students are beginning The Road to the American Revolution. As a class we just finished an in depth study of the French and Indian War which took territory from the French and gave the British full control over the 13 Colonies in North America. Now with the British in control we will begin to unravel the tensions which arose between the Colonists and the British to lead to the eventual break down of their relationship and consequently push them to war.

Final Blurb!

7th Grade: 7th grade students have finished this year successfully. The presentations were a pleasure to watch and the students as a whole completed this year on a positive note. I am amazed the year has come to an end. It seems like it was only yesterday that I was struggling to learn all the names of my new 7th graders who I have come to love. Enjoy your summers, and come back refreshed in August for your final year as middle school students!

8th Grade: 8th grade students have finished their time here at LPA. I know as the year was coming to an end it was hard to stay focused on school work. However, I was impressed with the final outcome of their WWII presentations and papers. I will miss the students and their individuality. I have grown to love these students and every morning as I drove to school I looked forward to seeing the faces of our future. I wish all of you the best as you move forward in life. Never lose site of your dreams and if you need anything or advice you know where to find me. Over the past 4 weeks the students have researched their chosen topics and with that information put together a multi-modal assignment. May 2nd, 2011 all students were required to turn in their final papers (typed, double spaced, with citations and bibliography), have a completed poster board, and a power point presentation ready to deliver to their classmates and myself. Starting the week of May 9th, 2011 students will finish their unit on the 1920's followed by a short quiz to demonstrate mastery of material studied. The year will finish with a study of current events!

8th Grade: 8th grade students are in the process of presenting their World War II history projects. Over the past few weeks, students, either in groups or solo, have prepared a detailed account of a narrow topic chosen by the students. Students need to have a strong thesis statement which they will deliver to the class and then develop through use of reliable research. A power point slide show as well as a poster board are required of each group and these each need to represent visually what is stated in their research papers. Once presentations are complete, we will continue with our study of the post-war period.

The year's end is fast approaching. I know students are tired and excited for summer. So it is crucial to find their second wind and push through to the end. I look forward to the continued presentations and the unique creativity that each individual project brings to the classroom environment. This has been a great year with more to come!

PROJECT GUIDLINES!

7TH AND 8TH GRADE PROJECT DEADLINES:

Thursday April 7th 2011: Research due! 2 book sources and at least 2 web sources

Monday April 11th 2011: Outline Due with Thesis Statement! outline needs to be written or typed. This week students in both grades have been busy taking notes, working on assignments, and collaborating with their peers. As mentioned in a previous blog, this quarter is the project quarter. Tomorrow, Friday march 25th, 2011 I will be giving both grades possible topics for their projects. The process I will take to reach the students will be visual images of the World Wars using my computer and projector to show them every aspect of the World Wars (People, Places, Battles, Warfare, Life at home, and any other related material).

7th Grade will focus on World War I. They may work in groups of 1-3 people as long as they get their groups approved. The topic chosen must be narrow enough so they are able to get into the meat of the issue and share with myself and their classmates their mastery of the topic selected. The project will need to be centered around a well developed thesis, which they will present in a multi-modal fashion. This means the students will need to create a power point, make a poster board, write a 2-3 page paper (with a bibliography), and present their findings to the class. I will take time in class to model each portion required for the project so the students understand and know what is expected of them.

8th Grade will focus on World War II. The requirements are the same as the 7th grade requirements however their paper must be 3 - 5 pages long, and their power point will require more slides then those of the 7th grade groups.

I look forward to working with the students and watching their projects unfold. I believe in each of my students and know what ever they put their minds to they will succeed.

CBM Testing!

CBM's will take place Monday March 14th, 2011 and Tuesday March 15th, 2011. Within this topic they have gained an understanding of the Spanish-American War, the rise of the Progressive party, and the impact of President Theodore Roosevelt. We are now transitioning into our next unit, which is the study of World War I. The students will develop a clear picture of the causes of World War I, what happened during World War I, and the results. This Unit will also include a project. The project guidelines will be given out when students return from Rodeo Break.

8th Grade: The 8th graders are in the process of exploring the Roaring 1920's and the events which took place during these years. This will take us on a journey around the world. They will gain knowledge of the reasons for social unrest, what led to the Great Depression, a review of the rise of totalitarianism in Europe, and the eventual out break of World War II. The World War II Unit will include a multi-modal project. The details of the project and requirements will be handed out after Rodeo Break.

Update and Progress Reports!

Hello parents, students, and staff
This is just a quick update to let everyone know I appreciate your patience with getting out mid-quarter grades. This Unit will cover what Imperialism is and how it affected the world. The students will develop an understanding of what countries were heavily impacted by imperialism and why the developed countries of the world practiced taking over land in third world countries. Included in their studies will be several map tests of the continents involved in this process. The students have already begun their study of Africa. Furthermore, by the end of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate their mastery of the reasons for Imperialism, such as access to resources, land, money, and of course an increase in power. We will follow this unit with a transition into World War I. I look forward to the discussions and work produced by my students.

8th Grade: 8th Grade students are continuing their Government Unit, which will end with a final Government test on January 21st. The next step will be a short review on the rise of totalitarianism in Europe following World War I. From here we will begin our Unit on World War II. The students will analyze the major causes of World War II, trace the series of invasions and conquests in the European and Pacific Theaters in WWII, describe the events leading to the Allied victory, as well as take an in depth look at how racism and intolerance contributed to the Holocaust. In addition to their studies they will also be required to take map tests of the major areas of the world impacted by this horrific War. Finally, the students will be required to do a project on WWII, however this will take place towards the end of third quarter and finish at the beginning of fourth quarter. I am excited to introduce them to this period of our history and review the work they produce covering this topic.

Welcome Back and Happy New Year!

Hello parents, students, and co-workers
I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday and Happy New Year to all!

December Update!

7th Grade: 7th graders are continuing their studies of the Industrial Revolution. They recently took a quiz covering the events that occurred as the Industrial Era first hit the United States. The topics included the impact of Industrialization on cities, people, and the country itself. Now the students will develop a more in depth understanding of what happened as the country recovered from the initial shock of Industrialization and began to surface as a competing Industrial Giant in the world. In addition, before we arrive at Christmas break, the students will begin looking at how Industrialization would lead to the rise of the middle class and the eventual need for the country to look overseas for access to resources and land. Imperialism will be the focus when we return from break.

8th grade: 8th graders are in the middle of their Government unit. This past Friday I assessed their understanding of topics discussed up to this point with a 15 question quiz. The topics centered around The United States Constitution, the amendments, and the important people responsible for this great document, The Supreme Law of Our land! Over the next two weeks we will continue our study of Government. This will include a study of both major and minor political parties, a study of the responsibilities of the three branches of Government, and how the Electoral College works in the election of the United States President. Furthermore, we will look at how Federalism works at the state and local levels of Government. My goal is for the students to demonstrate their mastery of government related topics before we leave for the holiday break. This unit includes an examination of the opportunities the Western Frontier offered to pioneers, and to the new immigrants coming into the United States. Within this Unit we have also analyzed the significance of Judicial Review and how specific decisions, like Dred Scott, Plessy vs. Ferguson, or the Scopes Trial impacted the Country. Following our discussion of the Frontier, the students will immediately begin the Unit on the Age of Revolution which as a class we will determine the effect of the Industrial Revolution on the Western World.

8th Grade: The 8th grade students are diligently working on their Government Unit. As a class we have examined how the following philosophies and documents influenced the creation of the Constitution: The Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, John Locke’s theories of natural law, and the social contract, the Articles of Confederation, and the Mayflower Compact. Furthermore, in our studies we have also uncovered the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and as such gained an understanding for the purpose of The Constitutional Convention. They are quickly approaching the end of the Civil War Unit and on October 8th (Friday) a test will be given on the Civil War so students can demonstrate their mastery of the topics studied over the past weeks. The students are working hard in so many areas to prepare for the coming test. We have covered book work, PBS Video coverage of the Civil War, handouts on specific people and events, as well as class discussion. I am proud of their hard work and look forward to completing the Unit and seeing the fruits of their labor. In addition, CBMs will take place on the 11th and 12th of October. Students will begin the Unit on Reconstruction at the start of Second Quarter.

8th Grade: The 8th graders are also working hard to prepare for their test on Friday October 8th. This test will cover the American Revolution and the events leading up to the Revolution. In addition, the students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of the Declaration of Independence. Furthermore, CBMs will take place October 11th and 12th and the Second half of each day will be regular class rotation. The students have done a terrific job this first quarter and I look forward to see the outcome of their hard work. The 7th grades students started the year by diligently tackling the issues that led our country to The Civil War of 1861 -1865. The unit covers topics such as The Underground Railroad, The Missouri Compromise of 1820, and 1850, Slavery and how to handle the issue of slavery with new states entering the union. Furthermore, students are gaining an understanding of the role important people played to help resolve the tensions between the North and the South. A few names discussed in class up to this point are; Henry Clay, Harriet Tubman, Thomas Garret, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Dred Scott. We have a lot more ground to cover before we reach the Civil War, but the students are working hard to achieve each goal set in class. The mid 1800’s was a tumultuous time in the history of the United States and many exciting events occurred that changed the direction of the country. I look forward to our continued discussions and explorations of the time period.

8th Grade: The 8th Grade Students started this year with an in depth look at the foundation of the 13 Original Colonies of North America. Included in our studies is a look at the rift between the French and the British over land in North America, which ultimately led to The French and Indian War. In addition, we have discussed the role the Iroquois played in the feud between the French and the British, and their interest in protecting the land surrounding the Ohio River Valley. The goal of this unit is for students to demonstrate an understanding of what happened to lead American Colonists to want freedom from the British. The students and I are on a journey of uncovering the road to the American Revolution.

Picture Day Monday!

Picture Day is Monday!

Students need to wear school uniform for picture day! Only two days until our first day of school. I cannot believe how quickly time passes! Parents, just so you know, I will be sending a syllabus home with each student as well as two student contracts. The first contract addresses the expectations of the student in the classroom, and the second contains the book numbers they are responsible for throughout the school year. These papers will need to be signed by the students, parents and myself. Both 7th and 8th graders will start the year off running as we have a lot of curriculum to cover in a short period of time. The 7th graders will start the year off exploring the Civil War and the events and issues surrounding the time period. The 8th graders, on the other hand, will begin the year discovering how the United States of America came to be country. I look forward to tackling these topics with my students and engaging in the conversations that will arise as we unravel the history surrounding our first units.

The following is a list of supplies the students will need to bring on their first day of school:

1.Notebook
2.Pencils
3.Pens
4.Expo markers and eraser
5.Kleenex

Any other supplies will be items needed for projects which will be required at the time of the projects.

I am energized and excited for the year to begin. I have reminded the students on several different occasions that their research is a key piece of their projects. Over the 3 and half weeks or so that they have been working on their projects, I expressed to them, "if they are having any problems getting to the library, or need my help in any other way, to come and see me and I will do whatever I can to assist them." Unfortunately, many groups came to class unprepared today, and this was somewhat of a disappointment.
The 8th grade requirements were to have 2 books from the public library and 3-6 reliable websites. This means no Wikipedia for use in their papers. Again, several students received a low grade for research check today because they came unprepared.

On a positive note, I had the pleasure of grading their poster boards yesterday, and they, for the most part, were fantastic. I was hoping today would be another successful day.

I offer all my students my time and even ask, and encourage them, to set up times to meet with me to address any concerns they may have. As a teacher, I want to help my students achieve great success. This project is a major part of their grade, and they have known about each piece since the beginning. If anyone has comments, questions, or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Finally, Rough Drafts are due tomorrow, please bring them in ready for peer editing so we can help each other reach the finish line.

Good luck to all!
Ms. VanBorkulo

7th and 8th Grade Project!

Here are the due dates for the different portions of the project, please make sure students are keeping up to speed and are communicating to me if they need help or are having difficulties.

Friday April 23: Outline is due. Here is a quick update on the current
happenings in Ms. Van's social Studies class!
First: The 7th and 8th graders both have a test tomorrow, March 30, 2010, in my class. The 7th graders exam will focus on chapter 4 and the topics we discussed in class regarding the Industrial Revolution and its effects on city life, the movement of immigrants into the country, the rise in discrimination with laws to enforce the prejudice, and how factory life impacted the lives of families including child labor. The 8th graders will be tested on their government unit. This unit focused on the Constitution, what it is comprised of, and from its creation how our government functions. Students will be asked about federalism, direct v. representative democracy, the three branches of government and their functions, as well as items within each of these topics. I am looking forward to receiving these tests as there have been a few issues with inside class work and homework. The tests should demonstrate the students mastery of their topics in ways I have not seen in this quarters class work.
Second: Both classes have received homework assignments over the past week and a half. The 7th graders were required to write a few paragraphs on how the Industrial Era affected the growth of cities both positively and Negatively. Also, they were asked to write a paper discussing their life when they were 7 & 8 years old and then compare and contrast their experiences to the experiences of the students they read about in chapter 4 and child labor. Furthermore, they had to complete all four lessons in chapter 4 and the chapter review. All of these assignments were due last week. I am sad to report not all the students met the requirements. As for the 8th graders they also have had work due to turn in as of last week. One assignment asked them to compare a Direct Democracy to a Representative Democracy. then tell what type of democracy the United States has, and finish by explaining how things would change if the country were to switch to the other type of Democracy. In addition, The students had several pages to finish in their government books which they had an entire week to finish. I am sad to report, that only a very few accomplished the assignments.
Third: On Wednesday I will be passing out their 4th quarter projects. 7th graders will focus on the World War I time period, 1914 - 1918. 8th graders will focus on the World War II time period, 1939 - 1945. I will post more about this project once we get started.
Finally: I have offered my time to my students on several different occasions. They are welcome to talk to me after school or before school, and I even am willing to set up appointments with them. Not many have taken me up on my offer, however, it is an open invitation.

Homework March 2, 2010 7th and 8th Grade

7th Graders: Tonight you are responsible for coming up with an invention. In addition, the key ideas of how the railroad changed the United States forever as well as the lives of the Native Americans in the country were discussed and the ideas challenged by the students. Now the students will begin the Unit on the Industrial Revolution. Within this unit we will cover the success of Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. Furthermore, we will look at the key ideas of how the country changed from agriculture to manufacturing and how industry was born. Finally, we will cover the concept of a monopoly, how they are created, and why they are now illegal in this country. This Unit should enlighten the students on how we have arrived at the type of country we are now and how important the role of tariffs are in the import and export of countries around the world.

8th Graders: The eighth graders finally finished all the components of the American Revolution, including the major battles of the War, and the important people who were key players in the United Sates gaining our independence. As a class we are beginning our Unit on the Constitution of The United States. So, a shift to government as we look at how our founding fathers came up with the principles like Federalism, Democracy, and the separation of powers in government. The study of the Constitution will allow the students to gain perspective on why the Constitution is known as the Supreme Law of Our Land. When we finish with this Unit we will take a look at the rise of Totalitarianism in Europe. I am sure the students will enjoy the coverage of our new studies. Good Luck to all!

7th Graders I need to see some improvement!

This past week and weekend I had high expectations of my students to work hard on their project. My expectations are that all groups will come prepared tomorrow to use the research to answer the questions about their city so as a class we can move on to the next Unit.

Homework for the 8th graders: Students selected a state and have to answer questions about their selected State. type='text'>December 8th, 2009 7th Grade Homework

Hello Students, Parents, and fellow teachers,

This is an update to the previous message concerning the 7th grade project.

Homework over the next two days is as follows:
Students need to start gathering research for their City Project.
Students may choose to use the Internet (If available)
Students can arrange a time with their parents to go to the library.
I also suggested going to AAA, or a similar travel agency.

Furthermore,
Students need to have their United States Map completely filled out with States and capitals, as well as have the map neatly colored.

The students will be allowed time in the computer lab to accomplish the requirements.
Please remember, group work demands that all students give what they can to the overall success of the whole. Do what you can, when you can, and ask for help if you need any whatsoever.

7th Grade Brochure Project!

The 7th graders are starting a project which will take them into 3rd quarter. The project is titled Tracing the History of a City. The students are working in groups of 2 - 4 people. The requirements are as follows: Students will start by filling in a blank United States Map with all 50 states and the capital cities. Once their maps are filled in and colored, they will choose, and research an American city with more than a million people. Second, students will need to find information on their cities using the Internet, getting a book or two from the library, looking through an almanac, and perhaps checking out a travel agency. Collecting the information about their city is extremely important as they are going to be tracing the History of their city over the years starting with the year 1860 and ending with the present. The information students will be required to gather is clearly stated in the handouts they received for the project. Although this project will take a lot of work, the students will gain a sense of accomplishment when they see their finished products. I know I am excited to see the outcome. If the students say they have no homework over the next week, they are not being truthful, as they have this project to work on, and every bit helps.

I have arrived

Hello,
after several weeks of attempting to access my web page I have arrived! I would first like to say thank you to all the parents, teachers, administration, and students for your patience. As my title states, I am the history teacher hear at LPA Central. I have had the pleasure of working at this site for two years now, and absolutely love my job. Although some days present challenges that I feel may push me over the edge. Most days I leave here with a smile on my face, thinking of something funny a student has said, an interesting occurence in class, a mind stimulating encounter with a co-worker, or just a sense of joy that I am actually living the dream I worked so hard for.
I will be regularly posting to keep all informed of what is happening in Ms. Van's 7th and 8th grade history class. Again, welcome to my site, and welcome to my classroom.
